Celebrating independence and legal victories; condemning the increasingly blurring lines between state and church

As fireworks lit up the sky this past Independence Day, we were reminded that freedom — real freedom — depends on keeping religion out of government. That’s why the Freedom From Religion Foundation continues to challenge Christian nationalism wherever it arises, defend personal liberties and uphold our secular Constitution.

Here’s what we’ve been up to this past two weeks — thanks to your support:

Christian nationalism is escalating — and we’re pushing back

  • Texas families sue over Ten Commandments mandate
FFRF is backing families who’ve sued to block a Texas law requiring the Ten Commandments in every public classroom. See what’s at stake.
  • RFK Jr.’s deadly vaccine picks
We sounded the alarm about Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s new advisory board stacked with anti-science ideologues. Public health is on the line. Read our release.
  • Prayer is not policy
From Utah’s day of fasting for rain to Governor Abbott’s prayer response to deadly floods, we called out magical thinking disguised as leadership. Texas | Utah

Legal & legislative advocacy

  • Wisconsin abortion ban defeated
We applauded a court decision finally ending the threat of a cruel 19th-century abortion ban in our home state. Celebrate with us.
  • Cheers and jeers
FFRF Action Fund cheered as Missouri ended child marriage — and condemned the regressive reconciliation bill moving through Congress.
Read more about progress in ending child marriage.
And our pushback on the reconciliation bill.Meanwhile, the FFRF Action Fund had two clear nominees for its “Secularist” and “Theocrat” picks. FFRF Action Fund’s “Theocrat of the Week” is Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene for announcing plans to introduce legislation to make “weather modification” a felony offense. The Fund’s “Secularist of the Week” is U.S. Sen. Ed Markey for opposing the Small Business Administration’s (SBA) recent display of an Appeal to Heaven flag, which has Christian nationalist meaning, at a Flag Day ceremony.
  • Military proselytizing? Not on our watch
We’re objecting to coercive bible study classes at a federal military hospital. See our action.

Americans want a secular government

  • Poll shows majority oppose religion in public schools
A new national survey affirms what we’ve long known: most Americans want to keep classrooms secular. Get the stats.
  • FFRF urges secular curriculum in Washington
We’re urging a school district to reject religious pressure and keep their curriculum free from indoctrination. Read our statement.
  • The Johnson Amendment still matters
The IRS may be asleep at the wheel, but the law barring churches from electioneering is still on the books — and we’re demanding it be enforced. Read our release.

Insight & analysis from Freethought Now blogs

  • June should’ve been a month of Pride — instead, it brought an alarming wave of anti-LGBTQIA+ attacks, from the military to the Supreme Court. Guest writer Kat Grant describes how sacrificing trans rights won’t stop authoritarianism — it will only accelerate it. Read the blog.
  • At the Young Women’s Leadership Summit, Charlie Kirk glorified subordination as empowerment. FFRF’s Caitlin Berray infiltrated, and calls it what it is. Read the takedown.
  • Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy’s recent sermon wasn’t just inappropriate — it insulted millions of nonbelievers. Here’s why we spoke out.
  • Our co-presidents explain why Ryan Walters’ attacks on secular education matter for every American. Read the op-ed.

Have you followed us on social media?
FFRF is on FB, IG, X (yes, still), Bluesky, and TikTok. Our latest TikTok explores the 10-year anniversary of same-sex marriage becoming legal in all 50 states.

On July 4, we celebrated the promise of freedom — but without separation of church and state, that promise rings hollow. FFRF will always fight for real liberty: rooted in reason, protected by law, and free from dogma.
